A single-family dwelling heated by a gas boiler was damaged following two small fires. The homeowner hired a contractor to replace two thermostats. The replacement thermostats used were not suitable for the system. The new thermostats, which were meant for use with a low energy control circuit, sustained fire and heat damage when incorrectly connected to a 120-volt heating equipment control circuit.
