Directive: BC Electrical Code Section 76 – Temporary Wiring

This directive is being issued by a Provincial Safety Manager pursuant to section 30 of the Safety Standards Act.

76-00 Scope

• This section of the Code covers temporary wiring installations for buildings or projects under construction or demolition and experimental or testing facilities of a temporary nature.
• The requirements of this section supplement or amend the general requirements of this Code.

Interpretation:

Section 76 only applies to wiring that is part of a temporary installation. Any wiring that is part of the permanent facility is not subject to the rules in this section even if that wiring is providing power for construction or demolition. Permanent wiring must be installed and protected to comply with the general code requirements for the environment that exists at the time of installation.

76-016 Receptacles

Receptacles having CSA configuration 5-15R or 5-20R installed to provide power for buildings or projects under construction or demolition shall be protected by ground fault circuit interrupters of the Class A type.

Interpretation:

Consistent with rule 76-000, rule 76-016 applies only to receptacles that have been installed specifically to provide temporary power and applies only to receptacles having CSA configuration 5-15R or 5-20R. Receptacles that have been installed as part of the permanent installation, but are utilized to provide temporary power, are not subject to rule 76-016.
