Amusement Devices

Design Registration

Overview

Fixed or temporary amusement rides and devices require design registration before installation. These can include simple mechanical designs using electro-mechanical machinery for public entertainment.

Licensed amusement device contractors can register the design but must have a qualified professional engineer of BC validate the conformance of their device to the appropriate codes and standards.

CSA Z267 Safety Code for Amusement Rides and Devices.

Design registration can be completed in the Design Registration Portal. If you don’t already have an account, register now. Please note that this is different from an Online Services account. You will need to have the following supporting documentation ready:

  • Technical documentation drawings
  • Calculations
  • Operating and maintenance manuals
  • Operator training procedures and inspection checklists

  1. After logging in to the Design Registration Portal, use the menu on the lefthand side to select “Amusement Device”, which will open a menu of categories

  2. Select the applicable category and complete the application form. If your file exceeds our maximum file size, contact engineering@technicalsafetybc.ca.

  3. When your application form is complete, save it as a draft and use the correspondence feature (envelope icon) inside the application to inform us that your application is ready for assessment. You will not be able to submit your application within the portal until it has been assessed.

  4. Once we receive your notification, we will initiate the assessment. If minimum requirements are not met, we will notify you via the Design Registration Portal.

  5. After an application has been reviewed and deemed to meet minimum compliance, an invoice will be generated.

  6. After the invoice is paid, an installation permit will be processed.

  7. In order to request an inspection, subsequent data requested must be updated into the appropriate fields through the draft form on the Design Registration Portal.

  8. When the application has been fully assessed, you will be instructed to submit the form.

To update your contact information or details of the person(s) responsible for operations and maintenance of the amusement device, please complete the Amusement Ride Contractor's Licence Form 1145 and check the "update" box.

Again, in some cases, Technical Safety BC's provincial safety manager will ask for an interview to discuss your knowledge of the adopted code for amusement devices, CAN/CSA Z267-00. You are also expected to be familiar with the Act and Regulations.

Submit the form to our Amusement Devices administrator by email: amusementdevices@technicalsafetybc.ca. There is no fee for this update.
