Certification Renewal FAQ
When do I need to renew?
Your Power Engineer certificate is valid for three years after the date of issue. You can renew online with Technical Safety BC up to one year prior to your certificate’s expiry date. Renewing early does not reduce the time of your certificate being in an ‘active’ status.
Note that you do not need to be employed as a power engineer to renew your certificate.
What if my certificate has no expiry date?
If you hold a power engineer certificate that does not have an expiry date, it expired on December 3, 2018. You will need to re-apply for your certificate to legally work as a power engineer.
What if I hold multiple certificates?
If you hold multiple certificates with independent scopes, you must renew each certificate before its expiry date. For example, if you hold a Fifth Class Power Engineer certificate and a Refrigeration Operator certificate, you must renew both certificates because their scope of work is independent from one another.
However, if you hold a Fourth Class Power Engineer certificate and a Refrigeration Operator certificate, only the Fourth Class Power Engineer certificate needs to be renewed, because the scope of the Refrigeration Operator certificate is covered by your Fourth Class Power Engineer certificate.
What are the benefits of renewing?
By renewing your certificate, you can continue to legally work as a power engineer in BC. You will also ensure your information is up to date with us. This way, we can provide you with current safety information such as directives, safety orders, and changes to Acts and Regulations.
Technical Safety BC also maintains a searchable public database of power engineer certificate holders in good standing, which you will be included in when you renew your certificate. This database helps our industry reduce identity falsification, and enforce non-compliance.
What happens if I don’t renew?
If you do not renew your certificate but continue to perform regulated work, you put yourself and others at risk. These are the consequences of working with an expired certificate:
- A safety officer may issue a compliance order, or recommend a monetary penalty
- A safety officer may be authorized to stop your work in the field
You will also need to re-apply for your certificate if you want to be able to legally work as a power engineer again.
